conluto – we build on clay

When we at conluto talk about clay and clay products, we do so with great conviction and enthusiasm. Because we know what clay as a building material can do in every respect. It's not just about healthy, ecological construction. It's about quality of life, a comfortable indoor climate, heritage preservation and even climate protection. And even though the word is often overused, building with clay – and therefore conluto – is all about genuine sustainability.

Our conluto story

How it all began.

The story of conluto began unexpectedly with clay: Jörg Meyer's neighbours needed help restoring a half-timbered house dating from 1820 – incidentally, the first half-timbered house in the Lippe district to be restored using the original material, clay, independently of the well-known Detmold Open Air Museum. That was in 1990, and the work was supervised by a clay construction expert and took over a year and a half to complete. The clay was mixed with the feet and worked with the hands. It was a hands-on experience that left a lasting impression on Jörg Meyer and laid the foundation for his company, which he founded in 1993.

His curiosity about clay as a building material and ecological construction – at that time a rather quirky fringe movement – turned into a passion and later a profession. The following period was characterised by experimentation, mixing and participating in various construction projects. Jörg Meyer relearned ancient knowledge.

Die Oberfläche unserer Erde besteht zum großen Teil aus Lehm. Lehm ist also ein Baustoff, der nahezu unendlich verfügbar ist. Weltweit.

Clay products

The need was there

It quickly became apparent that there was a growing demand for ready-mixed clay. This was because when clay was mixed on site, the results depended heavily on the properties of the clay found there. There was a need for a consistent, reliable quality of clay product that both professionals and non-professionals could work with equally well.

Jörg Meyer responded to the growing demand for ready-mixed clay products by founding his own company. We at conluto are delighted that Jörg Meyer's pioneering spirit, courage to implement his ideas and enthusiasm for clay as a building material led him, after a few detours, to found conluto.
