Clay plaster for matt and textured surfaces
You can create a clay plaster by combining a structure-forming filler, the plaster additive, with conluto clay paints. This creates lively surface textures that are characterised by a particularly intense colour depth.
The addition of fine sand makes the colours of the clay paint appear more intense. A natural and slight cloudiness characterises the design of conluto clay plaster. Depending on the amount of fine sand added, the textured effect can be refined from fine to rustic. The result is a surface finish with a plaster texture.
Like clay paints, clay plaster is easy to apply and creates a plaster-like look – without actually plastering. It is applied with a glaze brush and can be applied in even strokes or using the cross-stroke technique, for example.
conluto clay paint can be applied to all stable substrates. The substrate must be dry, clean, solid and sufficiently absorbent. Before application, the surface is primed with conluto casein primer in accordance with the technical data sheet. Film-forming and penetrating substances and dust must be removed beforehand. Non-adherent old paint or wallpaper must be removed. If in doubt, create sufficiently large test areas.

Rendering additive
The plaster additive is a texture-forming powder made from fine sand and is added to the clay paints. The entire range of clay paints can also be used as clay plaster simply by adding the plaster additive.
Interesting facts about clay paints
- Highly opaque, diffusion-open ceiling and wall paint for interior use
- Clay paints can be mixed together or tinted with pigments (up to 8% addition)
- Consumption depending on the absorbency of the substrate: 70-140 g paint powder per square metre
(for highly absorbent substrates, the highest consumption specified here should be expected) - The clay paint is sold as a powder in a bucket and has a shelf life of at least 3 years when stored in a dry and cool place
- Our 100 g sample bags are available for small test areas.

Decorative technique for clay paint: stencilling with a brush

The stencils are fixed to the wall with adhesive tape and masked off over a large area. Our clay paints and water-soluble pigments can be used for colouring. The paint is mixed to a thick consistency as normal. Special stencilling brushes are used for application. To make the work easier, the bristles are tied together briefly with adhesive tape so that approx. 2 mm of bristles protrude. To prevent paint from running under the stencil, a small amount of paint is taken onto the brush and first dabbed onto the adhesive tape of the stencil. Small amounts are then taken from there and dabbed into the free fields of the stencil.
The brush is held at a right angle to the surface. This process is repeated until the pattern of the stencil is clearly visible on the surface. The stencil is then carefully removed and can be reused after cleaning and drying.
Tip: A faded antique effect can be created by dabbing less intensively.
